Cabinet Discussion 04/28/2008
From ISURC
Here is a list of some of the ideas Dave, Tony, Eric and Jay could think of regarding next year.
[edit]
Good things on the year
- Some really great lectures
- OpenCV, Dr. Stoytchev, Autonomous bot
- 2 pizza events per semester
- Successful Outreach events
- ISU Daily advertising was used!
[edit]
Key points for next year
Here are all of the key points we discussed regarding next year
[edit]
General
- Make the club a less intimidating experience
- Encourage projects as a learning experience more than a goal
- Draw project leaders from underclassmen
- Laura: Being a project leader as an underclassman can be intimidating. Perhaps the juniors and seniors should be leaders, with emphasis that "leader" does not equal "only person with good ideas" OR "only person that does any work"
[edit]
Recruitment
- Talk to Engineering 101 classes
- Personal emails sent to all engineering/ComS students
[edit]
Projects
- Smaller scale projects - 2 per semester
- Break into small groups at beginning of year, each team comes up with a robot idea
- Each teams' goals:
- What does a robot do?
- Come up with a small scale project
- This will help people feel more connected
[edit]
Lectures
- More hardware lectures!
- Talk to Dr. Luecke for ideas
[edit]
Projects
We would like to encourage more robotics club members to feel a personal attachment to projects. In order to do this, we need to let them feel like they have a "stake" in the project and its goal.
- Again, smaller scale
- Can we get faculty mentors who would work with us on weekends?
- This would help students connect with faculty and be a good resource to help students learn and encourage learning, which is our club's goal.
- Stick to high-level x86 to facilitate rapid development
[edit]
Project Ideas
- VEX Robots
- Robosapien Hacks
- ISEK improvements
- HERO
- Mechanical Project
- NXT Kits
- Maze navigation
- The "Perfect Shot Billiards Bot"
[edit]
Miscellaneous Discussion
Here is all of the miscellaneous stuff we talked about.
[edit]
Lab Hours
- Call them something else? Tony says "Fun Time"
- Encourage people to come in for HW or other things
[edit]
Lecture Ideas
- OpenCV was good
- Do more hardware lectures! Any ideas?
- Lectures on the innards of ISEK
[edit]
Office supply budget
- Notebooks, notepads
- Get an ISURC portfolio - nice binder with information about projects, outreach, etc
- This is essentially a fundraising packet on steroids
[edit]
Movie suggestions
- Stick to the classics rather than the new movies
[edit]
Fundraising
- Katie Rice with CoE?
